The latest version of Bill HB 1639 updated the funding amount for the State Public Defender from approximately $3.49 million to about $3.66 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. Additionally, it removed a provision that would have automatically repealed parts of the bill after June 30, 2023. This increase in funding is significant as it provides additional resources for the public defender's office, which can improve legal representation for those who cannot afford an attorney.
