Plain-language change summary

The recent amendments to Bill HB 1636 increase the total budget allocation from approximately $117.7 million to about $170.8 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. Additionally, the changes clarify that funds meant for filling vacancies cannot be used for salary increases of current employees, ensuring that the money is used to actually grow the workforce rather than adjust existing salaries. This shift is significant as it aims to prioritize hiring new personnel over simply rewarding current employees, potentially addressing staffing shortages in state agencies.
