The recent amendments to Bill SB 30 make significant changes to how human trafficking and smuggling offenses are defined and prosecuted. Notably, the bill removes certain legal defenses previously available to those accused of these crimes, making it easier to hold offenders accountable. It also breaks down the offenses of aggravated human trafficking into separate categories and ensures that vulnerable adults are explicitly included in the definitions related to trafficking. These changes are important because they aim to strengthen laws against human trafficking and enhance protections for at-risk populations.
