Plain-language change summary

The amended bill SB 159 updates the requirements for minors wishing to marry in South Dakota. Previously, a minor needed only a notarized consent from one parent or guardian, but the new version requires that minors must be at least sixteen and obtain a court order confirming that the marriage is voluntary and in their best interest. This change matters because it adds an additional layer of protection for minors, ensuring that their marriage decisions are thoroughly reviewed by the court, thereby promoting their welfare and safeguarding against potential coercion.
