Plain-language change summary

The recent changes to Bill SB 719 primarily shift the retirement options for campus police officers. Previously, current officers could choose to participate in the Deputy Sheriffs Retirement System, but the amended bill now allows campus police officers hired before January 1, 2026, to opt for the Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement System instead. Additionally, starting January 1, 2026, all new campus police officers will be required to participate in the Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement System. This matters because it provides a clearer and potentially more beneficial retirement pathway for campus police, ensuring they have a solid retirement plan from the moment they start their roles.
