What changed in the latest version
11 added · 11 removedPlain-language change summary
The updated version of HB 1585 requires peace officers to report immigrants they suspect are in the U.S. illegally directly to federal immigration authorities like ICE or Customs and Border Protection. Previously, the bill only suggested that officers should use a tip line or website to make such reports and also included a penalty for not doing so. This change matters because it places a stronger obligation on law enforcement to report undocumented immigrants, potentially leading to increased federal involvement and enforcement in local communities.
