The recent amendments to Bill SB 980 introduce new restrictions on the use of PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam, specifically prohibiting the manufacture and sale of foams containing these chemicals by July 1, 2026, and their use by January 1, 2027. This change aims to protect both firefighters and the environment from the harmful effects of PFAS, which are linked to various health issues. Additionally, the bill retains provisions for providing assistance and grants to fire and emergency medical services, ensuring that these organizations can access necessary funding for equipment without restrictions related to PFAS contamination. Overall, these updates promote a safer approach to firefighting practices in Pennsylvania.
