The changes made in SB 1284 include specifying that students must first cover their tuition and mandatory fees with the financial aid they receive from federal Pell grants. Additionally, the bill now mandates that an independent student must have a family adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less to qualify for certain grants. Instead of an annual review of the grants, there will now be a special audit conducted by the auditor general to evaluate the effectiveness of these grants by a set deadline. These updates aim to ensure that financial assistance is properly allocated and aligned with the needs of eligible students, ultimately enhancing access to community college education.
