Plain-language change summary

The recent amendment to the bill introduced a temporary tax on certain gross receipts specifically to support tourism recovery in Washington, D.C. This addition highlights the urgency for action due to significant losses in visitor numbers and spending caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the competitive pressures from other cities. By applying this tax, the aim is to generate additional funding to help promote tourism and support the local hospitality industry during a crucial recovery period. This change matters because it aims to bolster the local economy and help D.C. regain its position as a competitive tourism destination.
