after an unsuccessful run for Governor in 1965, he defeated William C.
and then attended Harvard Law School and returned to the Commonwealth to practice law in the Roanoke area;
Battle in 1969 to become the first Governor of Virginia from the Republican Party since the S Reconstruction era;
and WHEREAS, Linwood Holton came to prominence in the Republican Party as a champion for school integration and the civil rights movement;
