Plain-language change summary

The updated version of SB 583 simplifies the approval process for prescribing psychotropic medications to children in foster care. Now, a licensed health care practitioner with mental health experience will conduct a comprehensive evaluation and document key information, such as the reasons for medication and its associated risks and benefits. The bill also retains the requirement for foster parents to notify the department about new prescriptions quickly. This change is important because it aims to ensure careful consideration and better documentation of mental health treatments for vulnerable children.
