In the latest version of Senate Bill 159, the language has been clarified regarding the prohibition of using a victim's gender, gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation as a defense in cases of first-degree murder and serious violent offenses. The changes emphasize that these characteristics cannot be used to justify violent actions against individuals. This matters because it strengthens protections for victims and ensures that their identities cannot be used to excuse or mitigate the severity of violent crimes committed against them.
