The updated bill, now titled the "Surprise Billing Protection Act," introduces key provisions aimed at protecting individuals from unexpected medical bills when they receive care from providers not in their insurance network. It explicitly prohibits surprise billing practices, which can occur when patients receive care from nonparticipating providers, leading to potentially high out-of-pocket costs. These changes matter because they aim to ensure that consumers are not unfairly charged for services they believed would be covered by their health insurance, promoting fairer billing practices in healthcare.
