The recent amendment to HB 379 allows acequias and community ditches in New Mexico to secure a lien on property through court judgments. This means that if someone fails to pay for water usage or related assessments, the ditch officials can pursue legal action to collect the owed amounts. This change is significant because it provides a stronger financial incentive for water payments, helping to ensure the sustainability of these vital water-sharing systems for agricultural communities.
