The recent amendment to SB 61 introduces definitions for "suffocation" and "strangulation" within the context of domestic violence laws in New Mexico. Additionally, it clarifies that the crime of aggravated battery against a household member can occur through these methods. This change is significant because it strengthens the legal framework for prosecuting these serious forms of violence, thereby enhancing protections for victims of domestic abuse.
