The recent amendment to Bill HB 856 allows county boards of supervisors in Mississippi to donate money not only for Confederate graves but also for civil rights memorials, sites, and destinations within their counties. This change is significant because it expands the scope of funding to include important cultural and historical sites that represent civil rights, promoting a more inclusive commemoration of history. By recognizing both Confederate and civil rights memorials, the bill aims to acknowledge diverse narratives within the state's heritage.
