The recent changes to HB 2247 expand the authority of physician assistants, allowing them to prescribe, dispense, and administer a broader range of medications, including certain controlled substances. Previously, physician assistants had limited prescriptive authority, mostly restricted to Schedule III through V controlled substances under strict guidelines. This amendment is important because it enhances patient care flexibility, ensuring that physician assistants can provide necessary medications, especially in situations where pharmacy services may not be readily available or during emergencies. Overall, it aims to improve access to medications and streamline healthcare delivery.
