Summary
Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that the Secretary of State shall immediately revoke (rather than may, within 6 months of the date of conviction or one year of the date of the accident, revoke or suspend) the driving privileges of any person who has been convicted of an offense that involved the unlawful operation of a motor vehicle and caused or contributed to an accident resulting in the death of any person.
Bill Text
What changed in the latest version
34 added · 34 removedPlain-language change summary
The latest version of Bill HB 4580 changes the wording to clarify that a person's driving privileges can be revoked if their actions are the direct cause of someone's death in a traffic incident, rather than just "causing or contributing to" an accident. This distinction is important because it makes it clear that only those whose driving directly leads to a fatality can have their licenses revoked. Additionally, individuals who have had their licenses revoked under this new rule still have the opportunity to appeal for termination or reduction of the revocation, providing them a pathway for regaining their driving privileges.
