Plain-language change summary

The recent amendment to HB 2301 clarified how counties can receive reimbursement for appointing qualified experts for competency evaluations of defendants. The key change is that counties are now required to assemble a list of qualified experts with input from both the prosecuting attorney and the defense bar, ensuring that the selection process is more collaborative and balanced. This matters because it aims to improve the quality and fairness of competency evaluations, which are crucial for determining whether defendants are fit to stand trial.
