The legislation has undergone a significant change regarding the population thresholds that determine the responsibilities of cities and towns for maintaining state routes. The previous threshold of twenty-five thousand has been raised to thirty-five thousand, meaning smaller towns will have more time before they are required to take on certain maintenance duties. This adjustment allows these cities additional time to prepare financially and logistically for these responsibilities, which can impact public safety and infrastructure management. Overall, this change is essential for ensuring that communities are adequately equipped to handle the increased demands of managing local transportation infrastructure.
