The updated bill SB 49 adds a requirement for registered sex offenders to notify emergency shelters of their status upon entry, making it mandatory for these individuals to inform staff. This notification allows shelter staff to access information about the offender from public registries to ensure the safety of all residents. Additionally, the revised bill emphasizes that no one can be denied entry to an emergency shelter solely because they are a registered sex offender unless there are other legal reasons. This change enhances safety while also protecting the rights of individuals seeking shelter.
