Plain-language change summary

The updated version of Bill SB 562 now specifies that courts must impose a period of supervised release for certain felony convictions, extending up to 50 years. This change removes the previous discretion for judges, making it mandatory to enforce supervised release, which can enhance public safety by ensuring that individuals convicted of serious offenses are monitored after serving their sentences. The bill also implies that those sentenced after a specific date may face a minimum supervised release of 10 years, signaling a stricter approach to managing offenders and their reintegration into society.
