The amended version of Bill SB 5559 now clarifies that superior courts in Washington can appoint guardians for youth aged eighteen to twenty-one who have experienced abandonment, abuse, or neglect, allowing these vulnerable young people to seek legal support as they transition into adulthood. This change is significant because it addresses a gap in the previous law where young adults in this age group, facing similar difficulties as minors, were unable to access judicial help. By establishing this guardianship option, the legislation aims to enhance protection for these youth, reduce their risk of human trafficking, and promote their overall stability and well-being.
