Plain-language change summary

The recent amendment to Bill HB 1707 changes how "salary" is defined for Washington state patrol members in terms of overtime pay. Previously, overtime earnings were exempt from salary calculations until July 1, 2017, but the updated version clarifies that post-July 1, 2017, salary will exclude any overtime beyond 40 hours per year. This change ensures that only base pay is considered for retirement calculations, which might affect the retirement benefits of state patrol members by potentially reducing their average final salary. This matters as it may lead to lower pension payouts for some officers, which could impact their financial planning and retirement security.
