The revised Bill SB 723 has added a requirement for high school students to pass a civics test as a condition for graduation starting in the 2020-2021 school year. Students must correctly answer at least 60% of the questions on a test that mirrors the civics portion of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services exam. This change is significant because it underscores the importance of civic knowledge in education, ensuring that graduates have a basic understanding of U.S. government and history. The bill also allows schools to administer this test from grades seven through twelve, offering multiple opportunities for students to take it each year.
