The recent amendments to Senate Bill No. 407 change how key officials in the Department of Indigent Defense Services are appointed and removed. Now, the Executive Director will be appointed by a board rather than the Governor, and can only be removed for good cause, providing more job security. Additionally, the Executive Director will now appoint the State Public Defender instead of the Governor doing so. Lastly, both roles must be members of the State Bar of Nevada, ensuring they are qualified legal professionals. These changes aim to enhance the independence and stability of the indigent defense system.
