The amendment to Assembly Bill No. 164 introduces a $5 quarterly fee that postsecondary institutions must pay for each student they enroll, which will be used to fund the Account for Student Indemnification. Additionally, the bill raises the minimum balance in this account from $250,000 to $750,000 before institutions can be exempted from the fee. This change aims to ensure that there are sufficient funds available to support students who may be harmed if their institution closes or violates regulations, thus providing stronger protections for students.
