The amendments to Bill AB 449 now allow county treasurers to issue credits or refunds for property taxes even if the partial tax abatement was not applied in the previous fiscal year. This change simplifies the process for taxpayers affected by such oversights, allowing them to benefit from refunds rather than waiting until the next tax year to claim a credit. By removing the requirement for the taxpayer to submit a petition after the fact, it streamlines the administrative process and makes it easier for residents to receive their rightful tax benefits. This matters because it helps ensure that homeowners and renters are not unfairly burdened by missed tax relief due to administrative errors.
