The changes to Bill AB 241 allow offenders to earn an additional 5 days of credit toward their sentence for every month they serve during a state of emergency related to a communicable disease, capped at 60 days. These credits can affect an offender's eligibility for parole, reducing their minimum and maximum sentence terms. Furthermore, the Department of Corrections is now required to report who received these credits within 60 days of the emergency declaration. This matters because it aims to provide some relief and incentivize good behavior for inmates during public health crises.
