Plain-language change summary

The updated version of Bill SB 2684 expands the list of counties that can house state inmates in regional facilities by adding several new counties, such as Alcorn, Yazoo, and Hinds, among others. This change is significant because it increases the capacity to manage state inmates in areas with unapproved jails, aiming to address overcrowding and ensure compliance with legal standards. Additionally, the bill clarifies that the Department of Corrections will prioritize which counties to contract with for housing inmates, providing more flexibility and responsiveness to regional needs.
