Plain-language change summary

The amended bill SB 2170 allows teachers, not just school authorities, to search lockers, desks, and personal belongings on school property without notice or consent from students, as long as they have a reasonable suspicion of prohibited activities like drug use or possession of weapons. This change is significant because it expands the power of teachers to conduct searches, which raises questions about student privacy rights in schools. The bill also emphasizes that any searches must be appropriate to the situation, taking into account the student’s age and the nature of the suspected offense.
