Summary

Amends the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act. Changes the short title of the Act to the Student Silent Reflection Act. Allows a teacher to conduct (instead of requiring a teacher to observe) a brief period of silence at the opening of every school day with the participation of all pupils assembled. Provides that this period shall be an opportunity for such silent reflection as may be desired by each individual pupil (instead of an opportunity for silent prayer or for silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the day). Effective immediately.

Plain-language change summary

The recently amended HB 4180 changes the title of the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act to the Student Silent Reflection Act. It shifts from requiring teachers to observe a period of silence at the start of each school day to allowing them to conduct this period if they choose. The amendment also clarifies that the silence is intended for individual reflection, rather than specifically for prayer or thoughts about the day's activities. This matters because it gives teachers more flexibility in how they implement the silence while respecting the diverse beliefs of students.
