Plain-language change summary

The amendment to Bill SB 644 allows elected or appointed coroners in Illinois to join the state's pension fund as if they were sheriff’s law enforcement employees. This change also permits them to count previous service time toward their pension eligibility. It is significant because it expands retirement benefits for coroners, potentially attracting more candidates to the position, while also stipulating that the cost of implementing this change will not be reimbursed by the state.
