The amendment to Bill H 4294 introduces a provision that excludes certain retirement benefits from gross income for police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians. This means that benefits received from the South Carolina Police Officers Retirement System and similar pensions will not be taxed as income. This change is important because it provides financial relief to first responders, helping them retain more of their retirement benefits during a time when many face economic challenges.
