The recent amendment to Bill H 5360 introduces term limits for South Carolina legislators: senators can now serve a maximum of two terms, and members of the House of Representatives can serve up to four terms. Additionally, any terms served before January 1, 2028, will not count toward these limits. This change aims to promote fresh perspectives in the legislature by preventing long-term incumbency. By restricting the number of terms, the legislature hopes to encourage more participation from a broader range of candidates.
