Document has been reformatted to meet World Wide Web specifications.)                 A concurrent RESOLUTION   To request the Department of Transportation name the portion of 6th Street in the City of Hartsville in Darlington County from its intersection with 5th Street to its intersection with East Home Avenue "Samuel L.
  Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Broome High School varsity and junior varsity strength teams of Spartanburg County earned both the 2025 Class AAA State Championship and the Overall Female Team State Championship at the South Carolina High School Strength Coaches Association State Meet held at Lexington High School on Saturday, November 8, 2025;
Davis Memorial Street" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of Highway containing these words.
and   Whereas, to the thrill of their exuberant fans, the Broome Lady Centurions stole the show in not only winning the AAA state championship, but also winning the overall team state championship and defeating competitive fields of opponents;
  Whereas, Samuel L.
and   Whereas, Broome had an impressive showing in both the varsity and junior varsity division with eight total state champions and double-digit, All-State lifters.
Davis was born February 17, 1953, in Hartsville, the youngest son of Albert and Josephine Davis.
The Lady Centurions demonstrated exceptional strength, teamwork, and preparation, earning top honors in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions, with twenty-six athletes representing Broome High School in competition;
Along with his eight siblings, he was reared in a loving and supportive extended family that included his grandmother, Nancy Toney Davis, Godparents Harold L.
and   Whereas, the team's remarkable performance included eight individual state champions, numerous All-State selections, and several new state records;
and Dorothy J.
and   Whereas, in the varsity division, Zaria Nash (110 Class) claimed a state championship and set new state records in the squat and total, while Madison Watson (130 Class), Kourtney Wofford (150 Class), and Mahalia Williams (200+ Class) also earned state champion titles, with Williams setting a new state record in the broad jump;
Young, and strong aunts, uncles, and cousins.
and   Whereas, in the junior varsity division, Makayla Evans (110 Class), Hannah Cooksey (120 Class), Natalie Ervin (130 Class), and Harlynn Dawkins (170 Class) each earned state champion titles, with additional All-State honors awarded to Breanna Daniel and Amber Ivey, alongside outstanding performances from teammates Sarah Bentley, Kaylyn Ross, MyJoi Powell-Anderson, and Payton Varner;
In this environment of love and support Davis grew up to become an outstanding business owner and an exemplary man;
and   Whereas, further honors were earned by Layla McKellar, state runner up and record holder in the broad jump, and by multiple All-State lifters including Riley Carson, Cheyenne Mitchell, Kaleigha Werts, and Armonie Brannon, with strong performances from Lanisha Gist, Maggie Humphries, Zoey Cooksey, Lisa Lyles, Keely Brown, and Mimi Foster;
and   Whereas, at the tender age of ten, Davis became a student of mortuary science under the leadership of Harold L.
and   Whereas, in a sport that demands discipline, strength, and competitive excellence, Head Coach Dr.
Young, the proprietor of Young & Young Funeral Home in Hartsville.
Chad Cooksey and Assistant Coach Rebecca Cooper maximized their own athletic experience and training to produce a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes life principles that will prove invaluable through life beyond the field of competition;
The Youngs were civic-minded members of the community and staffed the funeral home with individuals from the community, particularly young males.
and   Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the pride and recognition that the Broome strength athletes have brought to their school and to the Spartanburg community, and the members look forward to following their continued accomplishments in the days to come.
The Youngs invested in a plethora of young people, but the only one who stayed was Samuel Lee Davis.
Now, therefore,   Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
At age ten he was poor but ambitious, working diligently in the funeral home for several years, becoming a son to the Young family;
  That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Broome High School varsity and junior varsity strength teams, coaches, and school officials for a remarkable season and congratulate them for winning the 2025 South Carolina Class AAA State Championship title and the Overall Female Team State Championship.
and   Whereas, Harold L.
  Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Rodney Graves and Coach Chad Cooksey.
Young passed unexpectedly in 1978 followed a month later by his wife, Dorothy.

Young had long stated his desire that Davis own a "piece" of the funeral home.
Just before her death, Mrs.
Young honored the request with Sam sharing ownership of the funeral home with the Young's daughter.
At the daughter's request in 1983, Davis purchased her portion of the funeral home and became the sole proprietor;
and   Whereas, a visionary, Davis purchased adjacent property in 1996 to build a five-door garage and to provide additional parking for chapel services and community events.
The former garage was converted into a casket room that could house more than thirty high-quality units, and a conference room to provide privacy for families making funeral arrangements.
The Youngs legacy of first-rate service continues through the current generation;
and   Whereas, a pillar of service and compassion, Davis left an indelible mark on the Hartsville community through his selfless actions and unwavering dedication to others.
He ensured dignified burials for all families in need knowing he may not receive compensation, embodying the principle that everyone deserves a respectful farewell;
and   Whereas, like the Youngs before him, Davis empowered individuals without the opportunity to pursue higher education by helping them acquire skills through trade school or vocational training.
This enhanced their employment prospects and enabled them to better support their families.
During the holiday season, Davis generously gave away one hundred gift cards of one hundred dollars each.
Seniors received hams and turkeys to ensure they too could enjoy a festive holiday meal;
and   Whereas, Davis actively supported community events by providing parking for those attending gatherings at Pride Park, increasing accessibility, and fostering a sense of unity among residents.  He also served as a compassionate advocate for families navigating the probate process following the death of a loved one, recognizing the confusion and stress that can accompany legal matters;
and   Whereas, Samuel L.
Davis departed this life on October 2, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, selflessness, and a tireless commitment to serving others;
and   Whereas, it is altogether fitting and proper that this son of the Palmetto State who touched countless lives, embodied the true spirit of community, and left an enduring impact on the City of Hartsville and beyond be remembered with a street named in his honor.
Now, therefore,   Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
  That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request the Department of Transportation name the portion of 6th Street in the City of Hartsville in Darlington County from its intersection with 5th Street to its intersection with East Home Avenue "Samuel L.
Davis Memorial Street" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway containing these words.
  Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
