The recent amendment to Bill S 233 increases the homestead property tax exemption amount for seniors, disabled individuals, and those who are legally blind from the first $50,000 to the first $100,000 of their home’s fair market value. This change means that eligible individuals will now pay less in property taxes, providing them with more financial relief. Additionally, the bill removes an outdated reference regarding an obsolete homestead exemption, simplifying the law. These adjustments are important because they directly benefit vulnerable populations by easing their financial burden and streamlining regulations.
