The recent amendment to Bill S 939 introduces a provision that provides a one-time lump sum payment to non-vested members of the Police Officer's Retirement System who die in the line of duty. This payment, which can be up to $75,000 or the amount of the officer's accumulated contributions, will benefit the officer's chosen beneficiary as long as the death was not due to intentional harm. This change is significant because it ensures that even those officers who have not fully vested in the retirement system still receive financial support for their families if they make the ultimate sacrifice while serving.
