The recent amendment to Bill H 3445 allows a taxpayer's spouse to claim the four percent assessment ratio on residential property. Previously, only the main taxpayer was eligible to take advantage of this reduced property tax rate, which could have created a financial burden if the spouse owned another residence. This change is significant as it provides equitable tax benefits to married couples, potentially easing the financial strain on homeowners in South Carolina. The new rules will be in effect for property tax years starting after 2025.
