The recent amendment to Bill H 3299 introduces the "Citizenship Verification Act," which requires law enforcement agencies in South Carolina to check the immigration status of anyone they arrest using a federal system. Additionally, it mandates that a person's immigration status be recorded as part of their criminal record and that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) submit a report to the General Assembly about the number of undocumented individuals who are arrested or convicted. This change is significant because it formalizes how immigration status is handled in law enforcement, potentially impacting the treatment of arrested individuals and increasing the scrutiny of immigration matters within the state's criminal justice system.
