The recently amended Bill H 3230 now allows counties and municipalities in South Carolina to create ordinances that require cemetery owners to actively maintain, preserve, and protect their cemeteries. This includes keeping cemeteries clear of rubbish and debris that could be deemed public nuisances. This change is important because it seeks to improve the conditions of cemeteries, ensuring they are respected and cared for as significant spaces for community memory and heritage. Additionally, provisions for enforcement procedures will help local authorities ensure compliance with these maintenance requirements.
