The recent changes to SB 196 shift the focus from requiring county boards of education to maintain a minimum amount of insurance to instead requiring individuals and organizations using school property for community activities to have insurance. Additionally, the new version specifies that this insurance must cover at least $1 million for each occurrence, with excess coverage of at least $5 million, and must come from companies licensed in the state. This matters because it impacts who is responsible for obtaining insurance and ensures that adequate coverage is maintained for activities taking place on school property.
