The updated version of Bill HB 1113 extends the moratorium on new shellfish cultivation leases in specific waters off the coast of North Carolina from July 1, 2026, to July 1, 2031. This means that for an additional five years, no new leases can be granted, allowing for better management of shellfish resources in the area, which is crucial for environmental sustainability and local fisheries. The redrafted bill also clarifies the geographical boundaries of the areas affected by the moratorium. This change is significant as it provides a more comprehensive approach to protecting shellfish habitats while considering the needs of local communities.
