The revised version of House Bill 248 has clarified the conditions under which a single-family dwelling can operate as a home business without additional requirements from the North Carolina State Building Code. Specifically, it emphasizes that the dwelling must be occupied by the owner as their primary residence, the business activity must be compliant with local zoning laws, and the exemption will be lost if any of these conditions are not met. This change matters because it aims to ensure that home businesses meet basic safety and legal standards while allowing owners some flexibility in how they conduct their business.
