Plain-language change summary

The amendment to SB 409 introduces specific circumstances under which children can be exempt from compulsory school attendance. It clarifies that children attending private or parochial schools that provide education in English are included, along with those who are physically or mentally unable to attend, with particular conditions for pregnant females. Additionally, the bill allows for exemptions for children who are lawfully employed, streamlining the process for school superintendents to grant these exemptions. These changes are significant as they aim to provide clarity and flexibility for families regarding school attendance requirements and ensure that children’s distinct circumstances are considered.
