The recent changes to Bill HB 1371 have introduced provisions for the Department of Military Affairs to grant an honorary retirement rank to National Guard members with a minimum of 10 years of service in the Illinois National Guard and a total of 20 qualifying years of military service. This honorary rank will be one step higher than the rank they held upon retirement, but it cannot exceed specific higher ranks for various service categories, such as Major General for officers or Chief Master Sergeant for enlisted personnel. This matters because it acknowledges the dedication and service of National Guard members, providing them with a distinguished honor that reflects their commitment to the military.
