This bill is no longer active — its legislative session has ended, so there is no live prognosis. It would have to be reintroduced in the current session to move again.
Summary
Amends the Election Code. Requires first time voters who registered by mail to vote in person unless they first provide specified types of documents identifying their name and address. Permits a registered voter whose name has changed but who lives in the same precinct to vote after making an affidavit at the polling place as to his or her identity and registration (now, only if the name change occurred at certain times and only if another voter attests to his or her identity). Requires the election authority to treat the affidavit as a request to register under the new name.

What changed in the latest version

The latest version of Bill SB 1696 has made significant changes to voting procedures. It now allows first-time voters who registered by mail to vote in person more easily by requiring them to provide specific identification documents. Additionally, voters who have changed their names can now confirm their identity through a simple affidavit at the polling place, rather than needing the verification of another voter. These changes aim to make the voting process more accessible and efficient for individuals with name changes or those voting for the first time.
