The bill amends Idaho law to provide a special property tax reduction for certain disabled veterans and their surviving spouses.

  • Section 63-704

A claimant who is a veteran with a service-connected disability of one hundred percent (100%) or a disability rating based on individual unemployability rating that is compensated at the one hundred percent (100%) disability rate, as certified by the United States department of veterans affairs, shall also be eligible for a special property tax or occupancy tax reduction, as provided in section 63-705A, Idaho Code.

This adds eligibility for a special tax reduction for certain disabled veterans.

  • Section 63-705A

For tax year 2019 and thereafter, regardless of any reduction received under section 63-705, Idaho Code, a veteran with a service-connected disability of one hundred percent (100%) or a disability rating based on individual unemployability rating that is compensated at the one hundred percent (100%) disability rate, as certified by the United States department of veterans affairs, shall receive a special reduction in property taxes or occupancy taxes levied on his homestead, as defined in section 63-701, Idaho Code. → For tax year 2020 and thereafter, regardless of any reduction received under section 63-705, Idaho Code, a veteran with a service-connected disability of one hundred percent (100%) or a disability rating based on individual unemployability rating that is compensated at the one hundred percent (100%) disability rate, as certified by the United States department of veterans affairs, shall receive a special reduction in property taxes or occupancy taxes levied on his homestead, as defined in section 63-701, Idaho Code.

This updates the effective tax year for the special tax reduction for certain veterans from 2019 to 2020.

  • Section 63-705A

In the event that a qualified veteran applies for the special tax reduction in this section but then dies, the veteran's surviving spouse is entitled to receive the special tax reduction in that year and subsequent years, until such time as the surviving spouse remarries, dies, or no longer has property tax levied on the homestead.

This adds provisions allowing surviving spouses of qualified veterans to receive the special tax reduction after the veteran's death.

  • Section 63-705A

The special tax reduction shall be in the amount of one thousand three hundred twenty dollars ($1,320) or for the amount of the veteran's actual property taxes or occupancy taxes, as applicable, whichever is less.

This establishes a specific amount for the special tax reduction for eligible veterans.
