Plain-language change summary

The amendment to Bill HB 5213 adds provisions regarding oral health assessments for children in public schools and the roles of dental assistants. It specifies that local or regional boards of education are to request oral health assessments for children, which must be conducted by qualified dental professionals or pediatricians, and establishes guidelines for parental consent and notification. It also permits dental assistants to provide fluoride treatments under the supervision of a licensed dentist after appropriate training. This change matters because it formalizes the process for assessing and improving children's oral health in schools while expanding the scope of practice for dental assistants.
