Summary

Existing law requires the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the State Board of Education, and the State Department of Education to provide to the Director of Technology the individual nonpersonally identifiable or aggregate data related to, among other things, demographics of pupils and teachers. This bill would require the governing board or body of a school district or charter school to collect information on each pupil's race and ethnicity and to disaggregate that data, as specified. The bill would require that information to be used for state reporting purposes only. The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school districts for certain costs mandated by the state. Statutory provisions establish procedures for making that reimbursement. This bill would provide that, if the Commission on State Mandates determines that the bill contains costs mandated by the state, reimbursement for those costs shall be made pursuant to the statutory provisions noted above.
